Workshop Series 2: Forging Equitable Partnerships
April 21 and 23, 2021

 

The second workshop focuses on forging equitable partnerships, especially between IEC member programs and Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). The following topics are discussed:

  • What does an equitable partnership look like?

  • How do you go about establishing it?

  • What are the important dimensions?

  • How can we advance success across the board for both parties?

This session is intended to promote nurturing relationships and understanding that leads to personal growth by abiding by the following norms:

  • Center the voices of BIPOC participants

  • Respect others

  • Open-mindedness

  • Perspective-taking

Effective Group Work

Key questions about group work in general are posed to prepare for equitable partnerships.

  • Group characteristics and establishing groups

  • What is a group/team?

  • Sharing a commong goal (examples for IEC-PWI)

  • Social aspects of a group

  • Structure and clarity around tasks and personal engagement

Minority Serving Institutions:
America's Underutilized Resource for Strengthening the STEM Workforce

A summary of a report published by the National Academies Press in 2019 that emphasizes how MSIs can contribute to the overall need for STEM professionals.

Attributes of Minority Serving Institutions

A discussion of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and how they differ Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs).

Basic Steps in Crafting Partnerships

A discussion of the critical steps necessary to establish successful partnerships (part one):

  • Identifying areas of collaboration

  • Connecting authentically, establishing rapport

  • Discussing joint interests, significance

  • Identifying resources available

  • Cross-institutional challenges

  • Facilitating tools - time for practice

Q&A Session: What Does it Take to Connect Authentically?

An interactive question and answer session that provides helpful tips in how to connect authentically when entering into a partnership.
