Leveraging Broadband to Create a More Sustainable Planet

During the last few years, the telecom industry has taken on substantial efforts to minimize the negative environmental impact from telecom products and services. Focus has mainly been on reducing power consumption, and on introducing alternative fuels and "green" power sources. While these are certainly necessary actions, there is also a need to address the positive environmental impact of the use of telecoms. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies for telecom networks show that telecom can be a low-carbon technology. The potential efficiency gains and CO2 savings which can be achieved by using ICT-based on broadband within other industries is significant, for example through dematerialization or substitution of physical products for virtual ones. This session will discuss how broad deployment of broadband can lead to substantial reductions of CO2 emissions, and demonstrate how telecoms can be an integral part of the solution to some of the world's climate problems.

	Elaine Weidman Vice President, Sustainability, Corporate Responsibility, Group Function Technology & Portfolio Management Ericsson	Ms. Weidman has, since she started 1998, held a variety of positions at Ericsson. Prior to joining Ericsson, she worked as an environmental and LCA consultant. Ms. Weidman holds a double Master's degree from Boston University in International Relations and Resource & Environmental Management.

	Marc Fossier Chief Corporate Social Responsability Officer Orange	Mr. Fossier is Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer for Orange since March 2009. Among his positions during 20 years in the FT Group figure Executive VP Consumer Wireline Services and notably Chief Technology Officer in charge of technological strategy, standardization and innovation.

	Dennis Pamlin Expert, Climate Issues, Global Policy Världsnaturfonden WWF Sweden	Mr. Pamlin has a background in engineering, industrial economy and marketing. Worked with global policy issues since 1999 and corporate sustainability initiatives with leading companies like IKEA and HP and most recently with resource efficiency projects in China.

	Mike Wright Executive Director, Wireless Telstra	Mr. Wright leads the design, development and operations of Telstra’s wireless networks. He leads Telstra’s wireless capabilities through world-first achievements including the launch of the world-class nationwide 850Mhz Next G™ network, 3G Direct Tunnel, Blade Server and 21 Mbps HSPA+.

	Louis Zacharilla Co-Founder Intelligent Community Forum	Mr. Zacharilla is co-founder of the Intelligent Community Forum & the originator of the Intelligent Community of the Year Awards. He is co-author of “Broadband Economies” and speaks regularly on the impact of broadband on sustainable economic and social development.
