Deep Packet Inspection: Technology, Promise & Controversy. What You Need to Know.

The emergence of Deep Packet Inspection -- DPI -- as a central technology in next generation networking has resulted in no small amount of controversy. Much of this controversy stems from confusion about what exactly DPI is, why it is being deployed, and what is being done to address the concerns raised by consumer groups, civil libertarians, Internet users, regulatory agencies and even service providers. A balanced, fact-based view is essential to anyone looking to understand or deploy this important technology. To that end, we’ve put together a workshop that will foster an open, balanced and rigorous discussion of DPI’s capabilities, benefits, limits and concerns. Workshop participants represent a variety of organizations involved in the deployment of DPI. We have gathered DPI vendors like Alcatel-Lucent, Sandvine and Qosmos as well as carriers and service providers like Orange and Ipoque. The workshop will address the basics — a sort of DPI 101 — before moving on to more specific themes, such as DPI’s use by service providers and carriers as well as the major issues and concerns surrounding the technology. In the first module we will provide attendees with a vendor survey of the capabilities and limits of current and future DPI technology. In the second module, service providers will provide their perspective on DPI, specifically touching on the benefits of DPI to the end-user. Finally, in the third module, we will take on some of the controversial issues surrounding DPI including privacy concerns, its relationship to net neutrality, politics, regulation, and others. A significant portion of this module will be dedicated to open discussion which we expect will be robust and illuminating.

	Dr. Elan Amir President and Chief Executive Officer Bivio Networks	Dr. Elan Amir has more than 20 years of networking technology and leadership experience. He holds a doctorate in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley, and is a frequent speaker on the use and benefits of DPI for carrier, federal and commercial organizations.

	Don Bowman Chief Technology Officer, Engineering Sandvine	Mr. Bowman is responsible for leading Sandvine's technical vision, including strategic development, direction and future growth for Sandvine's products and solutions. He has spoken at events such as Broadband World Forum Asia, SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, ISS and the Communications Futures Program at MIT.

	Didier Duriez Director, International Backbone Network Factory Orange	Mr. Duriez is Senior Vice President of International and Backbone Networks Factory of Orange-FT Group. Activities cover the planning, engineering, programming and deployment as well as the production, supervision and maintenance of products and networks of the international subsidiaries.

	Sunil Khandekar Vice President, IP Competence Center, EMEA Alcatel-Lucent	Mr. Khandekar is vice president of the IP Competence Center for the Alcatel-Lucent EMEA region. He has 15+ years experience in the communications and networking industry and is an active participant in the IETF, having co-authored and contributed to multiple drafts.

	Klaus Mochalski Chief Executive Officer ipoque	Mr. Mochalski is CEO of ipoque. He has conducted research in the area of network measurements for five years working on international projects in the USA, Germany and New Zealand. Prior to his research he was working as an IT consultant planning and deploying large-scale network installations.

	Jasper Sluijs PhD Candidate Tilburg Law & Economics Center	Jasper Sluijs is a media and telecommunications analyst, specializing in network management and Internet governance. He currently is a PhD candidate at Tilburg Law and Economics Center.

	Jerome Tollet CTO and Co-Founder, Technical Department Qosmos	Mr. Tollet drives R&D and innovation at Qosmos. His strong technical expertise stems from several years’ immersion in Network Intelligence and DPI. Mr. Tollet is a frequent speaker at international conferences.
