Anti-Racism Practice in Engineering: Exploring, Learning & Solutions (ARPELS)
>>Anti-Racist Practice in Engineering (An Overview)
May 18, 2021 1pm – 2:30pm CT
The IEC is planning a series of capacity-building workshops during the first quarter of 2021. We recognize that personal and institutional biases and inequitable practices affect underrepresented minorities, including faculty and students in electrical and computer engineering (ECE). The intent of these workshops is to nurture an understanding of these patterns and frameworks that help to counter them, identify actionable steps to mitigate their effects in engineering education, and facilitate collaboration across individuals and institutions in a way that begins to facilitate tangible change.
The 90-minute session led by Dr. Delia Saenz, a social psychologist and executive council member of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues—an organization focused on social justice. The content aims to engage IEC members in a discussion of anti-racist principles and their utility in helping to identify bias and inequitable patterns in their units, institutions, and disciplines. We will also begin a discussion on change strategies. The desired outcomes of this workshop are to create shared understanding and promote the development of skills that can be applied at IEC institutions (e.g., metrics, initiatives, partnerships).

For all of the workshops in the series, participants will be expected to complete pre-workshop questionnaires and to engage self-assessment of conditions at their respective campuses to allow for measurement of post-workshop progress. In addition, we anticipate generating an array of best practices at the institutional level for advancing equity and ensuring all students, faculty, and staff thrive in their educational and/or career trajectories. Finally, the workshops will raise the profile of the IEC, leading to greater recognition and opportunities for IEC-PWI partnerships.
