Publications Advisory Board
The mission of the International Engineering Consortium is to serve the communications and information technology industries by providing education and information via conferences, publications, and on-line education. To assist the Consortium in adding value to its service objectives in the publications area, a Publications Advisory Board (PAB) will be assembled as follows.

The IEC PAB is composed of individuals from industry and academia organizations able to provide advice regarding the topical and product directions of IEC Publications activities.

The following is a listing of IEC PAB members:

Simon Dux
Head of Communications
BT Group's Chief Technology Office

Simon Dux is the Head of Communications in BT Group's Chief Technology Office, which drives the company's innovation strategy and technology vision. Before joining BT, Simon had more than 15 years' experience as a telecoms and technology writer, analyst and editor. He was the Executive Editor of Total Telecom Magazine, which was previously Communications Week International (CWI).

Prior to CWI, Simon was a senior analyst in the telecommunication services team at industry consultancy, Gartner Group. He was also Editor of Communicate, Associate Editor of Telecom Asia magazine and a member of the editorial team at Telecommunications International. In addition, Simon was a judge for the World Communication Awards for five years.

Simon has a degree in Journalism [Business sub-major] from the University of Southern Queensland and is a qualified electronics engineer - aviation systems.


James E. Goldman
Professor and Associate Department Head
Department of Computer and Information Technology, Purdue University

Dr. Goldman founded the telecommunications and networking technology (network engineering technology) program at Purdue University. He has more than 25 years of experience, including his current tenure as chief executive officer for InfoComm Systems, in requirements gathering related to network architectures and frameworks; performance of gap analyses; telecommunications strategy; network engineering; and design and implementation of local, regional, and global communications networks.

Dr. Goldman has been teaching network security at Purdue for nearly 10 years and developed the initial course offerings in network security. He is a certified information systems security professional (CISSP) with advanced training in computer forensics. He has received National Security Agency (NSA) certification in its InfoSec Assessment Methodology (IAM) and InfoSec Evaluation Methodology (IEM). He performs security assessments related to HIPAA, ISO47799, and ISO27001 standards. He is an internationally published author with market-leading textbooks in data communications and networking. Among Dr. Goldman's areas of research and publication are municipal telecommunications strategy, information technology economics and investment strategy, and network security investment strategy.


Frank Groom
Professor, Graduate Center for Information and Communication Science
Ball State University

Dr. Groom concentrates in the area of high-bandwidth networking, distributed systems, and the storage of multimedia objects. He is the author of six books - among his best known are "The Future of ATM" and "The ATM Handbook."

He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in information systems and was formerly senior director of information systems for Ameritech.


Eugenio Iannone
Vice President, Market Validation and Application Engineering
Pirelli Labs

Mr. Iannone is responsible for application engineering and market validation for Pirelli Labs and Pirelli Broadband Solutions. Mr. Iannone has held this position for five years after returning from a short stint with Cisco. In 2001, Mr. Iannone moved to Cisco's DWDM business when Pirelli Optical Systems was sold to Cisco. There, he had product management responsibilities in the network dimensioning group. Mr. Iannone first joined Pirelli in 1997 as a member of the network optical design team for Pirelli Optical Systems.

Prior to Pirelli, Mr. Iannone spent 10 years at Fondazione Ugo Bordoni in Rome as a researcher in the areas of optical transmission systems and optical networks.


Joseph Lababidi
Senior Manager, High-Technology Group
Accenture

Joseph Lababidi is focused on next-generation operational support systems (NGOSS), specifically in the areas of WiMAX and FTTH infrastructures and supporting systems.

He has extensive project management experience in the telecommunications industry, having managed large-scale and complex integration programs-including the delivery of interactive television infrastructure-for many leading global telecommunications companies. In addition, Mr. Lababidi has worked on business solutions systems (BSS) in the areas of customer relationship management, billing, and business intelligence. He also has overseen operations support systems (OSS) in the areas of order management, service provisioning, service assurance, and work-force automation systems.

Mr. Lababidi attended Imperial College in London, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical and electronic engineering. He also attended University College in London, where he received a Master of Science degree in computer science.


Sean McCarthy
Chief Scientist
Modulus Video, Inc.

Dr. McCarthy brings to Modulus Video many years of experience as an engineer and research scientist in small and large organizations. Before joining Modulus Video, Sean helped found ViaSense where, as chief scientist, he led technical development of commercial applications based on understanding the human visual system. Some of the applications that Dr. McCarthy developed include a system for optimizing video compression, a system for optimizing video displays, methods of extracting natural features in images and video, and methods of measuring the perceptual quality of processed images and video. He is also the author of several papers on retinal processing and holds several domestic and international patents on image and signal processing. In addition to his role at Modulus Video, Dr. McCarthy serves as a member of the board of directors of the MPEG Industry Forum. He earned his Ph.D. in bioengineering jointly at UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and his B.S. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.


Kirstin Röhrl
Dipl.-Verww.
Deutsche Telekom AG

Ms. Roehrl is responsible for internal and external communication in the technology engineering center at Darmstadt for Deutsche Telekom AG. She has 28 years of experience in several technical areas, as well as experience in job evaluation of the high-ranking posts at Deutsche Telekom and their international subsidiaries in Hungary, Slovakia, and Croatia. Her scope of activity covers access to all technical details in the range of the Deutsche Telekom, including published articles about state-of-art technologies and the exchange of knowledge and know-how with other companies.


David John Smith
Managing Executive, Special Accounts
Emerson Network Power

Mr. Smith, formerly president of Emerson Network Power, now oversees the management of critical company accounts for the company. Prior executive experience includes Marconi and Rockwell International, where he had a long and distinguished career with increasingly responsible positions of program management, customer service, and customer switching systems. As general manager of Rockwell's Telecom Service Group in Dallas, Texas, Mr. Smith had full responsibility for an EF&I Services group. He then became general manager for their Wescom Division in Downers Grove, Illinois. Prior to joining Marconi Communications, he was vice president of sales, marketing, and business development for Charles Industries.


Young-Sae Song
Director of Marketing
Redback Networks, an Ericsson Company

Mr. Young-Sae Song is responsible for the company's overall marketing efforts, focusing on next-generation networks for delivering triple-play services and fixed-mobile convergence. He is also responsible for identifying topics and programs that further the education needs in telecommunications. Prior to joining Redback, Mr. Song was the director of product marketing at Genesys Telecommunications, an Alcatel company. He also served as the director of product management at Riverstone Networks, where he developed and marketed carrier Ethernet solutions. Mr. Song also served as an associate at Booz, Allen and Hamilton, an international management and technology consulting firm.

Mr. Song has written for previous IEC publications as well as contributed articles and content to industry publications. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and his B.S. in industrial engineering from Northwestern University.


Liang-Tai Wu
Executive Vice President, Emerging Technology
PCCW Ltd.

Dr. Wu oversees new business opportunities for the company in leveraging emerging technologies. During the past several years, he worked on 3G mobile, wireless broadband, IPTV, MPLS-VPN, and Network-of-the-World (NOW) converged TV and Web services. He previously spent 20 years with Bell Labs and Bellcore before joining PCCW in 1999. While at Bellcore, Liang led development of VoIP, NGN, ATM, DSL, and IP-VPN. From 1993 to 1994, he was also an NSF principal investigator responsible for the development of Pacific Bell and Ameritech NAPs as part of the U.S. government's effort to commercialize the Internet.

Dr. Wu was named the 1995 Inventor of the Year by the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame and Congress for his work on ATM. He was also named a Bellcore fellow in 1996. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Ph.D. in computer and communication sciences in 1980.

In his previous capacity as a division manager for Bellcore/Telcordia's Applied Research, Dr. Wu often served as a reviewer and an author for various company publications, including internal technical memos, special reports on technologies, and weekly newsletters. During that time, Dr. Wu also served as reviewer for external technical journals, conference papers, trade magazines, and book chapters and published more than 40 papers himself.
