OVERVIEW

Despite competing technologies, shifting regulatory constraints and some highly publicized business failures, satellite communications can still provide successful business opportunities if approached with a well-constructed business model and a precisely targeted set of features. The New Satellite Industry: Revenue Opportunities and Strategies for Success, by Dr. Joseph N. Pelton (published by the International Engineering Consortium) studies the satellite industry's recent past to analyze its future, identifying the sectors and services that show short- and long-term growth potential.

Studies indicate that the first half of 2002 saw some 600 transponders' worth of new capacity launched into orbit, in the C-, Ka- and Ku-bands. That increase may double to 1200 transponders by the end of this year. How will all this new capacity be used? For everything from data delivery and IP services to television and broadcasting, mobile services and navigation. Voice services will take over about one-sixth of the added satellite capacity—not including voice over IP.

The key to identifying areas of profit potential within the satellite arena is to approach its various sub-markets with realistic expectations, a strong business case, and complete knowledge of the regional and national markets to be served. Dr. Pelton breaks the satellite monolith down to its constituent parts and identifies the strategies, tactics, products and approaches that will thrive in an industry in flux.

Dr. Pelton is a renowned international expert on the satellite industry. Director of the Space and Advanced Communications Research Institute (SACRI) at George Washington University, he is also a founder and Executive Director of the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Telecommunications and Information. Pelton has authored 16 books and research studies on satellites and wireless telecommunications, advanced technology, information regulation, and the long-range impact of technology on society.
