OVERVIEW
For three decades, satellite communications systems have played a key role in international and long-distance telecommunications services. This role, however, has been largely that of a support facility rather than a primary system. Nevertheless, in the coming decade, it is projected that new types of direct access satellite systems will be making a bid to play more significant roles. There is approximately a decade-long window of opportunity for direct-to-the-consumer (DTTC) satellite services to grow to a global scale and become a player along with fiber-optic cable and wireless communication systems in a hybrid or merged information market.
In addressing the future of satellite communications systems, the International Engineering Consortium is pleased to present Satellite Communications: The Transition to Mass-Consumer Markets, Technologies, and Systems, a new and updated report on satellite communications that is of interest to network and strategic planners, telecommunications executives and marketing analysts, international carriers, Internet service providers (ISP), and anyone concerned about current trends in telecommunications and information technology. This report is an expanded and fully updated version of The Satellite Revolution: The Shift to Direct Consumer Access and Mass Markets, which was published by the IEC in 1997.
Satellite Communications: The Transition to Mass-Consumer Markets, Technologies, and Systems presents and analyzes the results of a systematic Delphi survey that was conducted through support provided by the Glenn Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Respondents included a broad range of individuals that were drawn from industry, academic, and regulatory bodies, as well as satellite communications and telecommunications professionals from the United States and around the world.
The report projects the key market developments for satellites during the next five to 10 years. The relative market growth of fixed satellite services, mobile satellite services, direct broadcast satellite (DBS) services, and the new consumer-oriented highdata-rate multimedia satellite systems are examined on the basis of space-segment technology, ground-segment developments, service range, and flexibility and costs. This includes contrasting and comparing the various satellite services with one another and with the overall telecommunications industry. This report also projects the longer-term development of satellite communications technology and applications, particularly with regard to the impact of the new stratospheric platforms, advanced modem and multiplexing technology, convergence of satellite communications, navigation and space imaging, and new advanced applications.
