OVERVIEW

The move by telcos and service providers from circuit-switched to Internet protocol (IP)–based infrastructures is well under way. Much of the progress to date is in the deployment of equipment to operate those networks.

The market is maturing apace. Once the CAPEX (capital expenses) of deploying the IP infrastructure has been dealt with by the carriers and service providers, their next challenge will be to minimize OPEX (operating expense) or to maximize the revenue they realize from their new networks.

The Market for IP Enhanced Services provides an overview of the IP–based applications market for telcos, including interexchange carriers (IXCs), local-exchange carriers (LECs), competitive local-exchange carriers (CLECs), broadband local-exchange carriers (BLECs), and other carriers in the United States. It shows the status of the market today, as carriers migrate through the various stages of IP enablement, service integration, and unification. It covers all of the key approaches to IP–based applications service development and provisioning for carriers in the marketplace today.

The findings of this report are based on in-depth individual interviews that were conducted with representatives from all parts of the IP market, including telcos and similar service providers, software and equipment vendors, and standards-body representatives. It is also based on a comprehensive survey of industry professionals in the IP field to probe them on their current and future deployment plans.   Copyright © 2005 International Engineering Consortium
