Overview
Delivering the triple play of voice, video, and high-speed data is one thing; making money off it is another. As services such as IP voice over broadband and VoD come on line, carriers are seeking to define the business model that will enable these new offerings to spell success. To what extent is it possible to introduce new revenue sources while maintaining existing revenue streams? What is involved in securing premium content for the broadband network and delivering it at a profit to all players in the value chain? What is it the consumer wants in terms of entertainment and communication services, and what service bundles have best met these demands to date?
The presentations on this IEC ProForum Series CD address such key questions and challenges. Taking carriers in the Asian market as an example, this CD examines the business models behind delivering winning broadband services and how service providers can realistically transition to this next-generation environment

Broadband communications is changing the success equation for service providers of all varieties. Indeed, carriers who wish to survive must migrate from a voice-only model to one which embraces a range of communication and entertainment services. This entails deploying broadband access technologies that make economic sense while unlocking future market growth. In addition, carriers increasingly must integrate broadband mobility capabilities into their core set of consumer offerings in order to stay competitive. This panel of leading service providers will examine these issues and provide an overview of the current state of global broadband deployment.

As video on demand and other entertainment services begin to change the nature of communications networks, the business model for carrier success is also changing. The ability to deliver a triple-play of data, voice, and video services is becoming critical to future success, as is the successful migration from legacy networks to next-generation fiber and xDSL architectures. In addition, the ability to effectively deliver, manage, and bill for emerging broadband services can spell the difference between success and failure. This panel of industry leaders will discuss these issues and other imperatives for success in the evolving broadband environment.

Asia in many ways leads the world in broadband deployment and services. In both the wireless and wireline arenas, carriers in the Asia-Pacific region are demonstrating the potential for broadband adoption and usage among their traditional user base. As service providers worldwide seek the winning combination of applications, content, and communication platforms for future growth, many lessons can be learned from carriers in the Asia-Pacific region. This is also true for next-generation broadband access network options, such as FTTx and WiMAX. This session will present the perspectives of leading vendors and service providers regarding the potential and challenges of the broadband market in Asia.

Moving to a next-generation broadband infrastructure represents a daunting shift for many service providers. As they contemplate re-architecting the network, they may have to replace existing hardware and software and strategically plan a path to take them well into the future. Although moving to the next-generation requires a major shift, there are several viable strategies and business models to ease this transition from a monumental "all at once" move to more gradual phased approaches that can even offset costs with incremental revenues. This panel examines several business cases and models for transitioning to next-generation infrastructure and ensuring greater success.

The broadband industry developed in the past year many technology innovations for the first mile of the network. Additionally to the traditional cable or ADSL connection from the central office, new access flavors are now available for massive roll-out : READSL2, ADSL2+, VDSL (VDSL2 under preparation), PON, EFM; following various deployments models : Central Office based, FTTN, FTTP and FTTH (also known as FTTU); with a clear trend towards more fiberization of the network.
This session will provide worldwide feedback concerning the telecom operators deployment strategies of Fiber, especially highlighting the business cases related to the FTTH and FTTN deployments, what could be the expected ROI, in which situations is it the most profitable technology.

In 2000, Japan started to see 640kbps ADSL business service for 60 dollars per month to replace more expensive ISDN dial-up service. However, due to deregulation and competition, the broadband market exceeded 15 million users and over 35% penetration nationwide in only four years. Moreover, the price dropped by half and the speed increased 10 to 100 times. It even stimulated the FTTH market, which including FTTB is gaining users around 100,000 users per month.
This panel focuses on how DSL technology developed to reach such high speeds and how backbone infrastructure was built to pull the cost down to provide such service at an affordable rate. Several technologies will be presented, and the relationship between technologies, deregulation, standardization and deployment will be discussed.

This session will look at broadband customer service from a wholesale and retail perspective, discussing with key industry players what the future strategy for the industry should be. The aim of the session will be to understand what products and services the wholesaler should provide in order to ensure that the service provider (and wholesaler) can support a long-term sustainable business, that it can differentiate itself and add value, and that the end customer can choose the right service provider according to their needs.

Despite the tremendous growth of DSL and cable as a means of data access in recent years, many service providers are seeking to tap in to higher margin commercial services where traditional T1/E1 services remain the primary means of broadband access for businesses of all sizes. The goal of this session is to present the business case for delivering integrated voice and data services to small and medium businesses over packet-based broadband networks and to identify real-world issues and solutions associated with delivering traditional T1/E1 services and next generation services over fiber, DSL, and cable networks. This session will seek to answer the following questions:
- What types of voice + data business solutions are successfully deployed today in support of legacy telephony services over broadband networks?
- What network design issues must be addressed over a various packet based broadband networks to ensure voice quality of service levels required by business applications?
- What are effective migration strategies for transitioning both customers and the service network environment in support of enhanced revenues through next generation services?
