Definition and Overview
Definition
The use of existing copper to deliver high-speed data and voice services is the prime advantage of xDSL transmission technologies. At the same time, the existing outside plant (OSP) also presents a number of significant challenges for network operators. Deploying xDSL services is dependent on the quality and design of the OSP. Prequalification of copper loops is necessary to determine if the loop is capable of supporting xDSL transmission to avoid costly attempts at service turn-up.
Overview
This tutorial addresses xDSL technologies and their implementation. The tutorial will open with a discussion of xDSL's primary benefitnamely, that xDSL uses existing copper wiring to deliver high-speed data and voice services. A discussion will follow concerning the challengeswhich include existing OSP, prequalification, load coils, bridge taps, loop length, and noisefor network operators employing xDSL.
