Physical Layer Copper Cross-Connects

Definition and Overview

Definition
There are numerous types of physical layer copper cross-connect equipment available in the market today. Their designs are based on various cross-point technologies, matrix types, and application needs. Cross-point technologies are the means by which the physical copper paths are connected and disconnected from one another. Matrix types are the manner in which cross-points are grouped and interconnected within the cross-connect. Application architectures provide specific types of connection abilities for particular cross-connect applications.

Overview
Although one may think that all cross-connects are created equal, the differences between the technologies and design architectures have shown that some are better than others for specific applications. This tutorial discusses the cross-point technology and cross-connect architecture alternatives available in physical layer copper cross-connects.
