The Benefits of a Conversational Voice User Interface in a Voice Portal

6. Selecting a Conversational VUI
With a conversational VUI, users talk to an application using everyday conversational language. Talking to a conversational VUI is the closest thing to talking to a real person that current speech-recognition technology allows. With a conversational VUI, training is not required and users can quickly and efficiently accomplish their communication objectives. For users who are busy and do not have time to learn a new system of speaking—such as a typical wireless subscriber—a conversational VUI–based application is a powerful solution. The satisfaction rate of conversational VUI–based systems is significantly higher than menu-based systems because a conversational VUI system is the following:
  1. Easy to Use: Users do not need to follow a rigid hierarchy. They simply say what they want, when they want, speeding the time it takes to accomplish tasks.
  2. Natural: Phrases can be spoken in everyday language, increasing user acceptance.
  3. Efficient: More can be accomplished in a shorter time, increasing user productivity.
  4. Interpersonal: Natural conversation can be used to access and control the system. In addition, a conversational VUI system speaks clearly and is easy to understand.
  5. User-Controlled: The voice of the user has the power to control the system's actions at any time, eliminating the possibility of getting lost in submenus.
  6. Context-Sensitive: A conversational VUI provides help appropriate to the task being performed by the user, increasing the ability of the user to resolve questions on the fly.
