What are the advantages to the operator?
Moore's Law has helped pretty well for the past forty years, and seems likely to do so for the next 20-25 years. Given that, why hasn't that happened within photo-electronics?
Why wasn't this integration done before? Was it not possible?
What is the future of voice going to be in the next generation network given that voice is now commoditizing very quickly, carriers are making less margin on it, the pipes that are carrying voice are getting bigger, and voice is becoming just a tiny bitstream in a torrent?
