What's Wrong with Being a Smart Pipe?
A3
Mobile operators have two main parts: the "netco," which operates the network, and the "servco," which provides the customer experience. Most mobile operators tightly couple these two entities in an integrated servco-netco model, but some also support external servcos in the form of MVNO partners alongside their own servco businesses.
The continuing erosion of voice tariffs, triggered by increasing competition and regulatory pressure, puts mobile operators under considerable pressure, forcing them to look for significant cost reduction in their business operations while attempting to add new, innovative mobile data services to stem the overall revenue decline — a delicate balancing act.
While the default response of most mobile operators is to try to stay in both businesses, this presentation argues that concentrating on just the networking aspects and offering access to MVNOs is a viable business model.
