Speakers Share Their Views

The telecoms industry is struggling with the massive growth in use of video and peer-to-peer traffic. The industry needs to adopt a new strategy and approach, finding ways to work with internet services to open networks, provide APIs and web services. A strategy of "control, collaborate and imitate" can reduce traffic volumes (-30%), lower costs (-20%), and increase shared revenues (+20%). The discussion will share examples of how to succeed.

Simon Aspinall, Managing Director, Internet Business Solutions Group—Service Provider ~ Workshop 2

Internet piracy is an issue for both content and service providers. This session will look at the challenges it poses from different perspectives. Industry and government experts will talk about possible solutions using commercial, technical, legal and regulatory control mechanisms.

Klaus Mochalski, Chief Executive Officer, ipoque ~ Workshop 2

I will speak about EANTC’s recent independent test of carrier-class peer-to-peer (P2P) filters, analyzing the functionality and performance that can be expected today. In my presentation, I will review the major challenges of P2P filtering in service provider environments and assess the diverse solution approaches taken by vendors.

Carsten Rossenhoevel, Managing Director, European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC) ~ Workshop 2

Fiber to the Home is seen by most experts as the obvious long-term solution for wireline broadband access. The high cost of such deployments, however, require a fresh look at funding models to make FTTH economically viable. The presentation will discuss how open access architectures can facilitate the investment into the next generation of broadband access networks.

Wolfgang Fischer, Director, Business Development, Cisco ~ Workshop 4

Broadband services and applications require a homogeneous home network to guarantee quality of service and quality of experience. A secured and managed home network must be flexible enough to leverage existing home wiring while supporting a guaranteed service domain. The residential gateway—an integral element of the home network—needs to be the primary security sentry for the consumer, applying security policies to protect the home network and supporting management of all the essential home network functions.

At the Broadband World Forum Europe, service providers, equipment manufacturers, and technology innovators will be discussing the role home networking equipment plays in delivering high-quality services. Taking place on September 29 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., the session entitled “High Quality Home Delivery: The Role of Home Networking Technology in Ensuring Quality of Experience” will feature presenters from Ikanos Communications, Alcatel-Lucent, Belgacom, France Telecom, and Sagem.

Presenters will do the following:

  • Examine the home networking factors impacting quality and viewing experience for video services
  • Discuss quality of service and security frameworks
  • Explore home network management models for guaranteed video delivery

We hope you will join us on Monday, 29 September, for this informative presentation.

Sanjeev Challa, Chief Technologist, Ikanos ~ Session A4

Come and hear about multiple Unified Communications–based solutions that are most promising for enterprises, how these companies can benefit from them, and the challenges involved. We will also cover the efforts involved in piloting a large UC enterprise solution.

Ram Kumar, Associate Vice President, Infosys ~ Session B1

Learn more about 3G’s evolution to long-term evolution—the upgrades in networks, devices, and consumer behavior. Mobile broadband is quickly breeding an entirely new generation of mobile devices, which combine the mobility and connectivity of cellular handsets with the processing power of laptops and the visual experience of high-definition TVs. A wave of new services and content will flood the market. This session looks at some of the key questions that OEM vendors, operators, semiconductor manufacturers, academics, standards bodies, and software providers face today.

Tino Spadaro, Director of New Product Development, Networking and Communications, Freescale Semiconductors ~ Session B4

Converged access and backhaul for residential and business services, fewer active components in the access network, the elimination of local exchanges and the reduction of power and space consumption are critical objectives to secure long term profitable service delivery. Join session E5, Wednesday, 1 Oct, 15:30 – 17:00 and explore the benefits of various FTTx concepts and the value of WDM in the access and backhaul part of the network.
