How Open DRM Systems Enhance the Consumer Experience and Enable New Business Models

This session will outline the rationale behind the decision to adopt open-source DRM, demonstrate how Marlin works, and provide "real-life" examples of how Marlin is already being used. In addition, they will demonstrate how adoption of open DRM can enhance the consumer experience while increasing revenue for service providers and device companies. The session will include representatives from a consumer electronic company, a major service provider, a mobile device company, and a DRM company.

Prior to Intertrust, Mr. Mills worked at Vidiator and Nextreaming, where he was responsible for developing cutting-edge technologies to encode and stream multimedia to wireless devices. Mr. Mills also served as director of Sales for Intertrust. Before joining Intertrust he worked in the computer security, network management, and anti-virus marketplace for more than 15 years, acting as an agent and consultant for such companies as McAfee Associates, Axent Technologies Inc, Compaq, Novell, Mergent International, Intrusion Detection Inc, Quarterdeck, Security Dynamics, and Network Associates. Prior to that Mr. Mills worked in the entertainment industry, where he promoted and managed various groups for Riva Records, Stiff Records, Phonogram Records, and Epic/Sony.

Mr. Elia has been involved in the research and development of IPTV, DVB–H, DTT/MHP, and mobile and music services at Telecom Italia. He received his master’s and doctorate in electronic engineering from Politecnico di Torino and joined CSELT, Telecom Italia Group’s former R&D division, in 1994.

Mr. Guardiola is responsible for DRM–related issues for Telefónica R&D and coordinator and strategy advisor for DRM services in Telefónica España. He has a wide technical experience in the field of DRM technologies with a telecommunications degree from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and a dissertation in mobile DRM technologies. He has recently worked in the launching of the new Movistar music services.

Mr. Lokhoff represents Phillips on the management committees of the Marlin Developer Community and Marlin Trust Management Organisation, which support the development and marketing of the Marlin DRM system. He is also a board member of the Coral Consortium, which has released a specification for interoperability of DRM systems.
