Beyond Triple Play - Making Sure the Next Killer Application(s) Will Be Available on Your Network
9:00 – 12:00 | Monday, 26 March
Most operators find it difficult to predict the next killer application(s)-in the mobile sector, for example, few could predict the vast potential associated with SMS, and much capital and management focus have been wasted on WAP. This has the following implications for anyone planning to invest or reinvest in broadband infrastructure:
- A broadband operator must be able to add new services to, and tune existing services on, the network in a cost-effective and timely fashion. The network should not be viewed as a static distribution channel for a predefined set of services, but as a flexible distribution channel for the range of services and service variations subscribers really do desire.
- A broadband operator must be able to attract successful providers of new services to their network. It would be impossible for most operators to successfully develop and market all services that subscribers, as a group, will find attractive. On the other hand, betting on a subset can easily put the whole business at risk. An operator must thus be able to invite those that have successfully developed and marketed services into its network in a way that is mutually beneficial as well as timely and cost-effective.
This session will look into at what various industry pioneers have done to transform this set of requirements into reality.
