A variety of technologies have evolved to address first-mile connectivity in metro Ethernet networks. Bandwidth demand has grown as more applications are introduced, and the distance to the customer premises can be a challenge as the first mile becomes the second and third mile. The industry is offering better solutions to cover more customers at longer distances, deliver more bandwidth, and do it all in a cost-effective manner.
The short list of methods best addressing these first-mile access issues are fiber, copper, and wireless. Each method has its own strengths to fit the metro service provider, the customer geography (existing infrastructure versus greenfield), and the regulatory requirements.
Customers of any first-mile Ethernet access method expect high-quality, reliable service with SLA guarantees and E-Line or E-LAN connections.
This breakout session will review the advantages and challenges of each access method and discuss the OAM management and provisioning required to deliver profitable carrier-class Ethernet services.
