Carrier-Grade Ethernet and Service-Level Agreements
15:45 – 17:15 | Tuesday, 27 March

There has been a great deal of standards activity over the past several years to convert Ethernet to a carrier-grade service. As Ethernet evolves from a best-effort service to one that carries mission-critical enterprise applications, Ethernet SLAs and their verification are critical. As a best-effort service, Ethernet appealed to early adopters that valued low price over other considerations. For Ethernet to move into the mainstream and replace existing frame relay and private line services, it must be sold with SLAs, which are backed up with financial penalties. Recent standards activities have put in place tools and methodologies to measure Ethernet performance and, as a result, many carriers are now selling Ethernet services with SLAs. This session will discuss Ethernet SLAs from standards, carrier positioning, and equipment perspectives.
