Digital Rights: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
D4
Digital rights management is one of the most important issues content and service providers face today. Without it, consumers will not be able to enjoy content anytime on any device.
This session will focus on the entire digital rights ecosystem and examine the mechanisms that need to be implemented in order to allow content to move legally and easily between consumer electronic devices. We will address the state of efforts by various standards committees and present several alternatives that are the frontrunners and compare/contrast tradeoffs of each. We will pay special attention to the interface points between devices and networks and explore the issue of converting digital rights data between devices that do not support the same digital rights systems. To enforce DRM, we will take a look at the current technology being used and considered for watermarking and fingerprinting, which will allow content owners to track down rights violators and eventually lower the incidence of content piracy attempts.
