What Are Possible Service Provider Device Strategies for the Residential Market?
D2

The ISP pipeline can bring a new distribution channel for content and services to the residential market. Service providers, especially large incumbents, can leverage their broadband access market into new markets such as IPTV, VoD, entertainment, and voice communication. Controlling the network and providing these services gives a springboard into the home device market such as for DVRs, networking equipment, and fixed-mobile convergence systems. A key question for service provider is to what extent they should venture into the device market. This will have impacts on marketing, service and support, sourcing, and the need for end-to-end logistics. The further service providers venture into the device market, the more they will compete more head-on with the likes of Apple and Sony. On the other hand, are there market opportunities in partnering with the consumer electronics industry or other established players in the device market?
