The QoS challenges required to support IPTV, VoIP, gaming, NAS, and other services are complex. How can service providers meet them? While FTTH and VDSL2 enable more services and greater bandwidth, they increase the scale of QoS issues within the home network. Meanwhile, a variety of home network technologies [Wi-Fi (.11n), data over powerline, data over cable, data over phoneline] are being developed, but there is no clear picture of how the QoS standards for these technologies coexist with the service providers' QoS management tools and assumptions.
This session looks at the QoS challenges from the point of view of the service provider; starting from the managed residential gateway and the WAN access technologies in play. It looks at the home network topologies and identifies the points of bandwidth constriction that lead to QoS issues. It explores the QoS management tools, home network QoS standards, and identifies the QoS challenges and issues in delivering IPTV and other services.
