Creating Metro Ethernet Services for the Last Mile
Wednesday, September 13 | 8:30 – 10:00

The battle for last-mile business customers will not be won by focusing on the transport layer of the network. Instead, it will be dominated by carriers that successfully deliver the requisite service-level agreements to support layered business services. To fully realize the potential of this market, carriers need to carefully examine the service opportunities enabled by any new technology and how quality of service and class of service can be applied to create symmetrical business-grade services. There are several key metrics that need to be considered, including what level of guarantees can be wrapped around a premium service such as VoIP, versus a best-effort service such as Internet access. This presentation will examine how carriers can leverage layered services to generate additional revenue from each customer connection and look at the business case for scaling this service architecture throughout the access network.
