Increasing demand for new services poses challenges in the evolution of today's broadband access architectures. Applications such as video distribution and video-on-demand require at least an order of magnitude higher bandwidth to be constantly available to a large number of end users. Multiple users in a single household who require very distinct services bring up the need for highly differentiated, end-to-end service support through the access network. In addition, new technologies such as PON provide a means to improve the overall capabilities of the broadband access platform. Last but not least, traffic monitoring must be introduced that allows operators to create appropriate service offerings and billing methods. This session examines the impact of these changes in customer requirements and technological advances and how they affect the overall evolution of the broadband access network architecture.

Since joining NTT in 1980, Mr. Maeda has been engaged in R&D on access network transport systems for broadband communications. From 1988 to 1989, he worked for British Telecom Research Laboratories as an exchange research engineer. He currently leads the Global Strategy and Full Service Access groups within the Optical Access Systems Project of NTT's Access Network Service Systems Laboratories. He has been an active participant in ITU-T Study Groups 13 and 15, as well as the FSAN initiative. Mr. Maeda currently serves as chairman of ITU-T SG 15 and is a member of the IEEE and IEICE of Japan. He is also a feature editor on standards for IEEE Communications magazine.

Speakers

Lionel Adnet, Alcatel, has more than 16 years of experience in the voice, video, and data CATV and telecommunications broadband access markets. Mr. Adnet initially joined Alcatel in France in 1988. Between 1994 and 1998, he worked for Scientific-Atlanta and Nortel Networks. In 1999, he returned to Alcatel USA. In July 2003, he joined the Alcatel Asia-Pacific organization in Shanghai, China, and in August 2004, he re-integrated the Alcatel North America Access Network organization as vice president of product marketing with local responsibilities for DSL products and worldwide responsibility for fiber to the user.

Russell Davey, Manager, BT, graduated from Balliol College, Oxford, in 1989 with a first-class honors degree in physics. He obtained his Ph.D. from Strathclyde University in 1992 for his research into modelocked erbium fiber lasers. After an 18-month spell working as a software engineer with Logica, he joined BT in 1994. For several years, he was heavily involved in the first introduction and application of WDM in the BT network. In 2001, he obtained an M.S. (with distinction) in telecommunications engineering from University College, London. He now manages BT's R&D activities in optical access systems and is also co-chair of the next-generation access study group within the FSAN initiative.

Eugene L. Edmon, Executive Director, Broadband Access, SBC Laboratories, leads the group responsible for all broadband access solutions, including all the flavors of DSL used for consumer and business services, all access fiber technologies, and systems built on those physical layers. Dr. Edmon has been with SBC since 1994 in various capacities and was heavily involved in the early stages of DSL. He has been a key SBC management member of standards groups such as FSAN and FS-VDSL and has responsibility for SMEs at The DSL Forum, T1E1, and other organizations. Prior to SBC, he worked at Bell Labs for 10 years on data communications, operations systems, and telecommunication products. He has Ph.D. and M.S. degrees.

Didi Ivancovsky, Founder and Vice President of Products, BroadLight Inc., worked for 18 years at Telrad (a subsidiary of Nortel Networks) as a R&D manager. His varied communications background includes joint projects with Nortel as well as hardware and software telephony projects. In 1998, he joined the Access division of Telrad and served as head of the Embedded Software department focusing mainly on broadband access involving SONET/SDH, ATM, DSL, and telephony. This division was subsequently spun off and became a new company: BeConnected. Mr. Ivancovsky holds an M.S. from Hebrew University.

Junichi Kani, Research Engineer, NTT Corporation, received his B.E. and M.E. in applied physics from Waseda University, Japan, in 1994 and 1996, respectively. In 1996, he joined NTT, Japan, where he has been engaged in research on optical network systems for core and access applications. He received the Best Paper Award at the Opto-Electronics and Communications Conference in 1998, the APCC-IEEE Joint Award from the Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications and IEEE Asia-Pacific Board in 2001, the Young Scientist Award from the IEEE LEOS Japan Chapter in 2003, as well as other awards.

Kevin Liu, Vice President, Marketing, Alcatel Shanghai Bell, leads the marketing force in China in the areas of fixed, mobile, and private communications. Mr. Liu has more than 10 years' experience in the telecom industry in research and development, product management, business strategy, and sales and marketing for telecom solutions. He joined Alcatel in 1998 and has had held various management positions in China and the Asia-Pacific, yielding rich experience in IP access, broadband, mobile, and 3G networks and markets.

Soo-Jin Park, Principal Researcher, KT, received his B.S. and M.S. in materials science from Seoul National University in 1983 and The Korea Advanced Science and Technology in 1985, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in materials science from The University of Texas at Austin in 1995. Since 1996, he has worked as a principal researcher at Korea Telecom. His current research interests include optical access network and integrated optical modules.

Tetsuya Yokotani, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, joined the company in 1987 and has studied high-speed data communication and system performance evaluation. Currently, his interests include optical access networks and standardization of these protocols. He is also a section manager in information technology at the R&D Center of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. Mr. Yokotani has been involved in standardization activities within the ITU-T, SG15, and FSAN for PON technologies since 2000. He obtained the ITU-T Japanese associates award for these activities in 2003.

Quinn Zhao, Senior System Engineer, FTTH Project, Huawei Technologies Co., has been involved in FTTX and PON research and development since 1998. His current research and development focuses primarily on the FTTH technologies in access network, including PON technologies and architectures, multiservice over PON, the FTTH native services security technology standard, the FTTH standard, and system design in this field.
