Video over DSL Current Status, Benefits, and Challenges

The latest DSL technologies (ADSL2+, VDSL) and generation of Wire-Speed DSLAMs are materializing a huge broadband growth and increased revenues of video services deployments over the copper infrastructure. This key strategy, shared by many worldwide telecom operators is now implemented with new or enhanced DSL infrastructure, tailored for IP based video services delivery. This session will highlight the problematic of upgrading the installed base for new services and describe the major technology enablers for this reality :
  • Gigabit Ethernet aggregation as a cost effective transport technology for bandwidth consuming video services
  • Increased layer 3 functionalities in the access for efficient broadcast TV delivery
  • Guarantying a strict Quality of Service through prioritization & resilience
During the session, several operators will share their experience in deploying video over DSL.

Chairperson
Ted Hsiung, Head of Business Development, Cascade, has held senior positions with PCCW and CWHKT for the past 10 years. Prior to his current position at Cascade, a wholly-owned subsidiary and the technical services arm of PCCW, Mr. Hsiung was president of business development and management for PCCW, responsible for operations consolidation and the management of subsidiaries. Mr. Hsiung is currently the HK chairman of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. He is also a member of the Advisory Board on Business Studies at Lingnan University of Hong Kong.

Speakers
Fazal Bahardeen, Vice President, Fixed Solutions Division and Next-Generation Networks, Alcatel Asia Pacific, has held a variety of senior positions in the region and the company's headquarters in Paris, France, since joining Alcatel in 1988. Prior to his current position, he was the vice president and general manager of Alcatel's Fixed Network division in the Asia-Pacific, focusing on supporting telecom service providers in offering competitive and innovative broadband services to the end users with Alcatel's marketing-leading narrowband and broadband networking solutions.
