Video Compression Advances and Challenges

This session focuses on where compression technology is today and where it's going. It compares and contrasts compression techniques-primarily MPEG-4 AVC and Microsoft/SMPTE VC-1-and examines the relationship between advanced compression for SD and HD content and network, distribution, and delivery requirements. The discussion also considers key issues affecting the industry, including content sources, content rights, and home distribution.

Mr. Fielibert has worked in the broadcast and cable industry for 20 years, beginning his career as a design engineer in analogue system processing at Barco. At Scientific-Atlanta he is responsible for product strategy for the European and Asian markets and directs product marketing for S-A Europe. In 2002, Mr. Fielibert was formally acknowledged for his leadership and contribution to the cable industry by being selected as one of the "Euro 50 – Leaders in Broadband and Pay TV."

Jan Rychter, Chief Technology Officer, Sentivision

Feng Chi Wang, Technical Director, Conexant Systems, has been representing Conexant at JVT meetings for three years and is a member of SMPTE. During this time, he has been actively involved in the implementation and conformance verification of one of the world's first high-definition AVC/H.264 decoder ASICs. Prior to joining Conexant, Mr. Wang worked in the defense industry and at technology start-ups that strategically marketed digital multimedia standards in the form of innovative products and services.

Keith Wymbs, Director, Product Marketing, Tut Systems, is responsible for overseeing product marketing activities for Tut's digital TV and broadcast video transport markets. In this capacity, he has profit and loss responsibility for the company's video businesses, product management responsibility of its video product lines, and channel development ownership into video transport markets. Mr. Wymbs has previously held business development, strategic marketing, and marketing and sales positions at a variety of companies including AT&T and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
