For years now some IP-centric networking companies have been saying that voice - as in VoIP - will be a "free" service riding on top of high-speed, IP data networks. It turns out that they were correct. Well-engineered IP data networks hardly notice today's VoIP traffic as new IP voice services come on line.
But the prospect of substantial TVoIP traffic appears to invert the problem. The business requirement for Telcos to move to TV/entertainment content services - infotainment, if you will - is competitively compelling, both offensively and defensively, with sub-12-month ROI numbers. This session will look at the business case behind deploying TVoIP services, including scaleable video-on-demand, content differentiation and network-PVRs, as well as some of the engineering requirements for an IP network to handle millions of subscribers tied to access networks that need at least 10Mbps (for high-def) connections - 30Mbps preferred.
