Upgrading the Broadband Network Edge for Multi-Service Access

The access network has become a key focal point for discussion when considering the evolution of today's networks to the NGN (Next Generation Network) of the future. This focus is being emphasised by a number if issues impacting network operators and service providers including the following:

  • Ageing narrowband PSTN equipment and the need to find an NGN replacement.
  • The delivery of new broadband services.
  • The ability to give customers the flexibility to set up and configure their own services.
  • The need to provide enhanced platform capability within a shrinking envelope of capital investment.
  • The need to reduce the operational expenditure of running the network including people, power and accommodation.
These aspects and many others are placing new challenges on the access network and the need to consider the implementation and deployment of multi service access platforms to help reduce the amount of equipment that needs to be deployed as well as the efficient consolidation of traffic on to the backhaul and core networks of the future.
