Overcoming the Operational Issues of Gigabit Ethernet Services

As demand for flexible, low-cost bandwidth services continues to grow, Gigabit Ethernet services are steadily gaining the interest of corporate end users and service providers alike. But while Ethernet is nearly ubiquitous and well understood in the local-area network (LAN), provisioning and managing Gigabit Ethernet over a traditional SONET/SDH network can be tremendously challenging to existing service-provider operational procedures and physical infrastructure. This session will examine the challenges and potential solutions for delivering profitable Gigabit Ethernet services, including the following:

  • Operational issues: Planning, designing, provisioning, and managing
  • Compatibility with traditional network infrastructure
  • Relevant standards and their impact on network-design options
  • Financial considerations: Pricing and bundling strategies, operational expense impacts
