Challenges and Solutions in Delivering Broadband Services It is generally accepted that the resolution to the pressing economic challenges facing the telecommunications/networking industry lies in the wide-scale deployment of broadband services. The concept of "broadband" network services, however, is not newfiber-to-the-home (FTTH), MSO broadband via hybrid fiber/coax (HFC), wireless access, and others have been proposed for a number years. This session will first look into the reasons why mass broadband service deployment has yet to take hold. Following that background, the panel will offer compelling evidence that an alignment of the proper business models, compelling new service offerings, and the correct technological infrastructure can indeed produce profitable broadband service products for wide-scale commercial deployment.
Chairperson Richard Kushner, Vice President, Industry Relations, Marconi, leads Marconi Broadband's outreach to those who observe, comment, and advise upon the telecommunications industry, including industry analysts, financial analysts, investment community, consultants, and media. Central to this role is the shaping of Marconi Broadband's strategic messaging and market positioning. Speakers Shailesh Shukla, Vice President, Marketing and Business Development, Redback Networks, is responsible for all marketing activities for North America, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and Asia-Pacific. Bruce Friedman, Managing Director, Sprint, is responsible for identifying new service initiatives consistent with Sprint's strategic plans and developing key opportunities. Patrick Hurley, Manager, TeleChoice, helps clients to hone their market strategies, understand the dynamics of the growing DSL market, and effectively market their products. David Perry, Director, Marketing, Actelis Networks John Spirtos, General Partner, Optical Capital Group, joined OCG in March 2000. Mr. Spirtos managed HRLD Venture Partners from October 1998 to May 2000. Al Weigand, Vice President, Operations and Technology, Penn Telecom, holds this unique position for both North Pittsburgh Telephone Company and Penn Telecom Inc. |
