Advances in Optical Network Technologies

Technological innovation in the telecom industry often occurs faster than the practical ability to implement it in real-world applications. Nowhere is this more evident than optical networking over the past two years. It has been said that optical technology is advancing at a rate faster than Moore's law. This creates a dilemma for carriers trying to make decisions for their networks. The key question is whether any individual advance is worth investment.

  • What optical networking advances are on the market in 2003?
  • Which of them are customers really deploying?
  • What are the practical deployment requirements?

Stephen J. Susina, Senior Manager, Optical Networking Group, Tellabs, is responsible for marketing for the TITAN family of digital cross-connect systems, optical transport products, and multiservice transport switches.
