Carrier Network Migration Strategies Carriers are beginning to deploy next-generation network capabilities based upon IP open systems technologies into their network infrastructure. A key aspect of each carrier's evolution plan is the open systems capabilities associated with IP. The open systems attributes of IP are catalyzing the development of a truly open network architecture enabling third-party development of value-added services, which is the objective of the advanced intelligent network (AIN) architecure associated with the traditional PSTN. This includes incumbent local-exchange carriers (ILECs), which are deploying next-generation network (NGN) technologies under a cap-and-grow architecture, as well as competitive local-exchange carriers (CLECs), which are deploying the same technologies in a greenfield architecture. Wireless carriers are deploying IPbased capabilities as part of their 2.5G and 3G evolution strategies to an allIP network, and cable companies are deploying softswitches as a central part of their NGN evolution strategies. In this session, we will hear from carriers in each industry segment discussing their particular implementation objectives and challenges as they evolve their infrastructures into the NGN space.
Chairperson Carl Bergstrom, Director, AIN and IP Services, VeriSign, is responsible for product and liability, AIN, and converged IN/IP next-generation services. He previously worked for 13 years at Lucent Technologies, where he held development and senior product-marketing and management positions in Lucent's 5E switching and IN business units. Speakers Daniel Dacosta, Head of Regional Product Management, Equant, supports Equant's complete service portfolio. He serves as the liaison between regional sales, network, and product management. Anil Reddy, President and Chief Executive Officer, Kancharia, founded Kancharla initially as an information-technology consulting firm working in network integration, cabling, and computer-based PBX phone systems. Robert Smith, Senior Director, Data Transport and Connectivity, BellSouth, leads product management for optical products, including SONET and Ethernet networking products. |
