Migrating to IP and Packet Networks

The ability to transmit both voice and data over the Internet is alluring, presenting seemingly endless multimedia possibilities, but total migration to IP networks is still years away. Next-generation networks provide cost-effective, faster service and the ability to supply not only voice, but also powerful revenue-generating applications. However, migration is not taking place quickly because network operators are concerned with maximizing current public switched telephone network (PSTN) infrastructure investments. This slow migration has brought about the existence of converged, hybrid networks that combine both PSTN and IP environments. This session will discuss the challenges faced by carriers moving from PSTNs to IP networks, and the current use of converged, hybrid networks. Additional key topics to be discussed include the following:

  • Logistics of the transmission of voice and data between traditional and next-generation networks
  • Methods for seamlessly bridging PSTNs and IP networks
  • The importance of maximizing investment in the proven, revenue-generation capabilities of existing PSTNs and PSTN applications
  • Steps network operators are taking to make the migration and interoperation seamless throughout the world
  • Challenges presented by hybrid networks and what companies are doing to address those challenges
  • Both current and future revenue-generating applications available through IP networks
