Breaking the Metro Bandwidth Barrier

Optical networks represent the future of telecommunications. Billions of dollars have been spent on global-network backbones where 40-gigabit speeds are common, but the metro remains a challenge. This session will focus on the latest technologies that-when combined-deliver optical capacity in the metro, breaking the bandwidth barrier and enabling service providers to accelerate their revenues by reaching end users more easily and efficiently. The panel will examine the complementary roles of these technologies:

  • The metro network landscape
  • Fiber-optic cable penetration
  • Free-space optics access technology
  • Breakthroughs in optical routing and switching

CHAIRPERSON:

Baksheesh S. Ghuman, Chief Marketing Officer, LightPointe, was most recently vice president of marketing for Sorrento Networks, an optical networking company, where he was responsible for executing its overall marketing strategy. Prior to Sorrento, Mr. Ghuman was at Electric Lightwave, a regional service provider, where he was responsible for private-line services including long haul, metro, SONET, co-location, dark fiber and DWDM.

SPEAKERS:

Steve R. Hane, Vice President, Business Development, LightPointe, is responsible for the development and management of LightPointe's strategic alliances and sales efforts.

Hasan Imam, Principal, Equity Research, Thomas Weisel Partners, was previously the senior research analyst covering the optical components and systems industry at Donaldson, Lufkin, and Jenrette (JLJ).

David Lively, Senior Manager, Cisco Systems, focuses on developing strategies for the metro optical market to help service providers increase revenues and profitability.

Ron Young, Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer, Yipes, was vice president of marketing and sales at Diamond Lane Communications (now Nokia High Speed Access Products). He also launched the first LAN services for Pacific Bell and transparent LAN and frame-relay services for U S West.
