Managing Next-Generation Optical Services

With rapid deployment of the WDM technology in the network, the capacity problem seems to have been solved in the core network for the foreseeable future. However, to provide the next generation of telecom services in a cost-effective manner (by lowering both capital and operational expenditure with increased revenue for the service providers), today's primarily point-to-point optical network has to evolve toward a dynamic optical transport system, with true service transparency. This poses many challenges for service providers, as well as equipment manufacturers and management software vendors. The speakers of this session will discuss some of the challenges and how they are being addressed by the industry.

  • Challenges in Provisioning
  • Mega Lambda Management
  • Fault Detection and Restoration
  • Planning and EMS–to–NMS Integration
  • Enabling Technologies for Optical Network Management
  • Wholesale and Resale

CHAIRPERSON:

Jayanta Das, Director, Software Development, Alphion, has more than 15 years of experience as a software architect, developing and managing large network-equipment systems for SONET/SDH, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), IP, and common management information service element (CMISE) applications. Mr. Das holds a M.S. in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology.

SPEAKERS:

Matt Hoffman, Senior Product Manager, NMS, Appian Communications, is responsible for defining and developing next-generation services and EMSs.

Mazen Salloum, Manager, Product Marketing, Teraburst Networks

Cheenu Srinivasan, Senior Member of the Technical Staff, Parama Networks, has more than a decade of experience as a software developer, architect, and lead, delivering carrier-class software for IP, ATM, and SS7–based networking products. He has also been an active participant and contributor at the IETF and OIF. Dr. Srinivasan holds a Ph.D. in computer engineering from Princeton University.
