Connecting or Competing?: 802.11, 3G, and Bluetooth

The evolving capabilities of 802.11, 3G, and Bluetooth technologies have changed our perceptions regarding their relative position in the wireless landscape. Service providers are increasingly looking at wireless local-area network (WLAN) technologies as a means for extending their wireless data offerings. Interconnecting and interoperating networks built on disparate technologies will be key to extracting the full benefits of their capabilities.

  • WLAN Roaming, Handoffs, and Hot-Spot Coverage
  • Complementary Roles of WLAN and 3G Technologies
  • Simultaneous Operation of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
  • Technical Aspects of Emerging Business Models for Future Wireless Networks

CHAIRPERSON:

Dr. Prabhakar Chitrapu, Principal Engineer, Chief Technology Officer, InterDigital, works on advanced technology projects in the areas of mobile Internet, 3G systems, and WLANs. Prior to InterDigital, he worked at Lockheed Martin, focusing on the development of various aspects of mobile satellite communication systems based on the GSM standard.

SPEAKERS:

Eric Carr, Senior Manager, inCode Telecom Integrated Service Group, focuses on how emerging technologies integrate into existing systems. He has consulted with numerous wireless and wireline carriers in North America and Asia on business and technology decisions related to network services.

Peter Stanforth, Chief Technology Officer, MeshNetworks, has more than 20 years of telecommunications industry experience. Prior to joining MeshNetworks, he was vice president within the Excel Switching division of Lucent Technologies, responsible for the technical marketing for IP–based softswitch technologies.

Tim Godfrey, Strategic Marketing Manager, Intersil Corporation, has been involved in the wireless LAN industry since 1994. He is the secretary of the IEEE 802.11 Standards Committee. In addition to his role in strategic marketing, he manages Intersil's Blue802 program, enabling coexistence between 802.11 and Bluetooth technology from SiliconWave. He has previously been developer of Intersil's media access controller chips.
