South African incumbent telco Telkom launched a commercial residential ADSL trial in the highly populated Gauteng province at the end of August with the commercial trial of its upgraded-copper service.

:: Help Plan the Educational Program for 2003
Broadband World Forum Planning Meeting

Join the Broadband World Forum 2003 leadership team by participating in the Planning Meeting, which will determine the educational session topics for next year's event. Experts in the industry are invited to attend the Planning Meeting, where you will obtain the latest updates on where we are and where we are heading in this fast-changing communications industry and be able to share your thoughts in this regard with your peer-group associates. Companies will also have the opportunity to volunteer themselves as chairpersons for these educational sessions.

The Planning Meeting will be held 13–14 November 2002 at the Novotel London West in London. There is no fee for attending.

The Latest Reports on DSL

:: The number of DSL lines worldwide grew by 36% in the first half of 2002, from 18.7 million to 25.6 million.

:: DSL growth in Japan and most of Western Europe continues to be strong, and all countries except Korea have a long way to go before approaching saturation.

:: Asia-Pacific is still by far the biggest region with 10.7 million lines. North America is next with 6.6 million lines, but Western Europe is closing the gap with 6.4 million.

:: Top 10 DSL countries in terms of numbers of lines: South Korea, USA, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, Canada, France, China, Spain, and Italy

:: Top 10 DSL countries in terms of lines added in the first half of 2002: Japan, USA, Germany, South Korea, China, Taiwan, France, Spain, Brazil, and Canada
