CHICAGO - July 12, 2007 - In honor of lifetime contributions to the electrical and computer engineering community, Dr. Wallace Stanley Read was inducted as an Eta Kappa Nu Eminent Member during the IEEE Awards Banquet at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. Dr. Dave Irwin, president of HKN, presented Dr. Read with the certificate of induction at the black-tie event, which hosted approximately 400 industry professionals and guests.

HKN Executive Director Roger Plummer lauded the recipient, "Eta Kappa Nu is pleased to grant this honor to such a deserving individual. Using his influence as a highly respected industry leader, Dr. Read has advanced and improved the electrical and computer engineering field with countless contributions."

Eta Kappa Nu honors notable industry professionals by awarding Eminent Member distinction to individuals whose attainments and contributions have resulted in significant benefits to society. It is the highest honor bestowed by the HKN Board of Governors.

Throughout his career, Dr. Read has diligently worked to further the efforts of the electrical and computer engineering community. Between 1964 and 1984, he held senior positions with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and its subsidiary companies. In 1985 he joined the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA), serving as its first full-time president. In that position Dr. Read worked to promote the interests of Canadian electric utilities and the customers they serve. Upon retirement in 1995, Dr. Read formed REMAS Inc., a provider of electric power consulting services to utilities and governments.

Dr. Read's professional affiliations include being a life member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador, a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), a life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineers. In 1996 Dr. Read was elected president of the IEEE, the world's largest engineering professional society with 365,000 members in more than 150 countries. His dedication to improving the industry is mirrored in his active involvement with these esteemed organizations.

Over the years, Dr. Read has received numerous prestigious awards, including IEEE-Canada's General A.G.L. McNaughton Gold Medal, the Engineering Institute of Canada's Julian C. Smith Medal, the CEA's Distinguished Service Award, the Canadian Standards Association's John Jenkins Award, the IEEE Power Engineering Society's Power Life Award, the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers Gold Medal, the IEEE Standards Association International Award and the IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Medal.

In addition to these honors, Doctor of Engineering degrees (Honoris Causa) were conferred upon him by the Technical University of Nova Scotia and by Memorial University of Newfoundland. In 2003 Dr. Read was elected a Member of the Order of Canada, and in 2007 he was awarded the Engineering Institute of Canada's highest award, the Sir John Kennedy Medal.
