Eta Kappa Nu Gives Tribute to IEEE Fellow Dr. Arun G. Phadke with Vladimir Karapetoff Award
CHICAGO – April 1, 2008 – Eta Kappa Nu, the honor society for electrical and computer engineering, last month awarded Dr. Arun G. Phadke with the Vladimir Karapetoff Award, its most prestigious award for career contributions to the field of electrical engineering and for his technical contributions to the field of power system monitoring, protection and control. Dr. Phadke accepted the award at an Eta Kappa Nu luncheon in Philadelphia amongst his friends and family. Mr. Stanley Horowitz shared in this award and was also honored at the luncheon.
Dr. Bruce Eisenstein, vice president of Eta Kappa Nu, was pleased to honor Dr. Phadke and noted, "Dr. Phadke has devoted himself and his career to the field of electrical engineering and we applaud his efforts and achievements."
Dr. Arun G. Phadke spent the first thirteen years of his career working in the electric utility industry before joining Virginia Tech in 1982. He served as the American Electric Power Professor of electrical engineering from 1985 until 2000 when he was recognized as a University Distinguished Professor. He retired in 2003 but continues as a research faculty member of the electrical and computer engineering department of Virginia Tech.
Dr. Phadke was elected an IEEE fellow in 1980 and to the National Academy of Engineering in 1993. He was editor-in-chief of Transactions of IEEE on Power Delivery and was chairman of the Power System Relaying Committee of IEEE from 1999 to 2000. In 2000, Dr. Phadke received the IEEE's Herman Halperin Award for his outstanding contributions to electric transmission and distribution.
Dr. Phadke joined the executive committee of the U.S. National Committee of CIGRE, and presided over their technical committee. He previously served as secretary, treasurer and vice president of USNC-CIGRE, participated in CIGRE SC34 for several years, and chaired many of their working groups. In 2002, the governing board of CIGRE elected Dr. Phadke a "distinguished member of CIGRE."
He joined colleagues from Europe and the Far East in founding the International Institute for Critical Infrastructures (CRIS); was the first president of CRIS from 1999 to 2002, and currently serves on its governing board. Dr. Phadke received an honorary doctorate degree from the Institut Nationale Polytéchnique de Grenoble (INPG) in 2006.

Vladimir Karapetoff Award
This major HKN recognition for career accomplishment dates from 1922, when the board of governors established the award in honor of Vladimir Karapetoff, an IEEE fellow and a prominent member of Eta Kappa Nu. Since 1992, this major recognition of career accomplishments has been presented to a practitioner of electrical or computer engineering who has distinguished himself/herself through an invention, development or discovery in the field of electrical or computer technology. To nominate an individual for this award, contact Kathy Ricker, HKN administrative director at kathy@hkn.org.
